How do I register?

Players can register at http://www.thejomaya.com/mpc/registration

Our capacity is approximately 150 players, and therefore You should register on time to maximize your chances of being able to attend.

The forms are downloadable from the web site http://www.thejomaya.com/mpc. Players can also get the entry form (registration form) from the Centre directly. However signed forms will have to be submitted alongwith the necessary supporting paper as indicated in the registration form.

The registration deadline is Wednesday, July 01, 2009. Players registering later and before the tournament will not have a priority over July 01, 2009 registrations. No new registrations will be entertained unless under special circumstances and subject to availability of place in the draw. However this is subject to the discretion of the organizers of the tournament. The Thejomaya MPC (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) Tournament will be held on July 5th 2009 at 9am at the Centre.

Who is organizing the Tournament?

This tournament is organized by Thejomaya, Centre for Excellence.

Centre is coaching for School students from Standard VI with the objective of honing their skills to achieve greater insight into the concepts and thereby providing stronger foundation for concept based study and to equip/support the students with better career prospects. Thejomaya has engaged the services of excellent faculty who have more than 15 years experience in teaching students for various professional courses/board viz., IIT JEE, AIEEE. The Centre is operational at 9 Karpagam Avenue, 1st Street, Behind ICICI Bank (Opp to Mayor Ramanathan Hall, Santhome High Road), R.A Puram, Chennai 600 028.

What is the objective of the Tournament?

Thejomaya aims to mix education with competition. Students will create a habit of competing against another student to establish themselves that they are good.

It helps the students to work on objective type questions by bringing analytical methods of learning that he or she had undergone in the past.

It will help the student to focus sharply on the answers as all are objective type questions.

Speed being the essence of answering after analyzing the questions within a short span of time, the tournament will enhance student’s skills to face competitive exams such as, SAT, BITSAT, JEE, AIEEE, CAT etc.

Students tend to get back to the tournaments as they wish to prove themselves better than what they performed before.

It will motivate the students to go back home and work harder and smarter when they realize the other student was better in the competition.

Who is eligible to participate in the tournament?

Only Class 9 (students who passed 8th standard in academic year 2008-09) and Class 10 standard (students who have passed 9th standard in academic year 2008-09) with bonafide proof, studying in a school of any Board (CBSE, State, Matriculation, ICSE) are eligible to participate in the tournament.

The question paper is the same and both Class 9th and 10th standard students will compete in the same category.

Students who are found violating any norms including the eligibility criteria will be eliminated from this tournament and disqualified from participating in future tournaments.

Are there any rules that I should be aware of?

You must send the filled in registration form duly signed by both the players and the Parent/guardian. To support the bonafide you may bring any one of the following copy as proof:

1. Mark sheet of the previous year.

2. Certificate given by the school

3. Identity Card

4. Any other as proof of your class

You must report 30 minutes before the scheduled time of the tournament.

You must adhere to all the norms of any exam that you would write in your school.

What is the format of the tournament?

It will be a knock out tournament. Thejomaya will organize draw of lots to choose which player will be pitted against whom. The tournament format shall be as follows:

If the total entry is 16 and less, knock out format will be followed after a qualifying round for all the players. The qualifying round will enable seedings of players and draw of lots to pair players against each other.

If entries are less than 40, there will be a qualifying round for all players to select 16 players to play in the main draw.

If players are less than 70, there will be a qualifying round for all players to select 32 players to play in the main draw.

If players are less than 150, there will be a qualifying round for all players to select 64 players to play in the main draw.

The qualifying round can be in the form of a league between group of players or will be in one single draw where only the top qualifiers depending on the number of entries would be chosen.

Tiebreakers:

During the qualifying round:

If two players have the same score in the qualifying round (tie break) for entering the main draw, both the players will be allowed to enter the main draw.

During the knock out stage:

If two players have the same score in the knock out stage (tie break) the player who scores by answering less number of questions will move to the next round.

Content of the test papers:

The Subject Tests (Mathematics - Algebra, Geometry, Unitary Methods; Physics – Motion, Light, Forces, Units and Dimensions and Chemistry – Acids, Basis & Salts, Chemical Equations, reactions, Carbon Chemistry, Laws) are 20 to 30 minute tests each with objective questions of increasing difficulty. Each test will carry questions with equal marks. These tend to change subject to the methodology adopted by Thejomaya while setting the question papers. The number of questions, duration is purely at the sole discretionary of the organizers.

The question papers are set by Thejomaya’s experienced faculty keeping in mind the syllabus applying to all the Boards.

Calculators and Other Computational Aids

You may not use books, notes, calculators, pocket organizers, slide-rules, or any other computational aids. Similarly you may not use graph paper, rulers, protractors, compasses, architectural tools, or any other drawing aids. Communication devices such as laptops and cell phones are prohibited.

Answers

Answers must be in the form of marking one of the 4 choices mentioned against every question.

For eg:

Answer Sheet:

1. A: 7.23 B: 8.23 C: 723 D: 0.723

2. A: 812 cm B: 812mm C: 644 cm D: None of the above

You will have to circle one of the choices for every question. Either A or B or C or D. You cannot circle two or more choices. If you do so the same shall not be accepted and will be considered as wrong answer.

However if you have circled a choice that you wish to change, you may do so by crossing (x) the older choice and circling the corrected option.

No workings should be made in the answer sheet. Workings should be made only in the blank sheets provided by the Organisers.

You must write your name, role number and your opponent’s name in the answer sheet clearly.

Will I get back my Answer Sheets?

No. You will not get back the answer sheets. The organizers will merely announce the scores of the players. You should return the question papers back to the Organisers alongwith the Answer sheets.

However the organizers have kept a special class between 9am and 12 Noon on Sunday, 12th July 2009 at the Centre for all players who wish to clarify any questions given in the tournament. The players shall be permitted only on showing the receipt of the entry fee. The faculty member will be present to clarify the doubts.

How much does it cost to participate in the tournament?

There are NO ENTRY FEES to participate in the tournament. Players will have to register as per the rules only and there is no fee payable for participating in this tournament. When you come to the Centre you must bring a bonafide proof. Participants who are unable to show the proof will not be permitted to participate in the tournament. Any exception to this rule would be at the sole discretion of the Organizers.

What will Thejomaya provide for the tournament?

Thejomaya, the organizers will provide you work sheets and pen. You should return the answer sheet after your round.

Water will be provided in the centre.

How long will be the tournament?

It would depend upon the number of entries. Every round will last for 20 to 30 minutes. Depending on the performance, the student advances to the next round. If the student loses he may return home. For players advancing to the next round they must stay in the Thejomaya Centre awaiting their next round call. Normally the organizers will call within 20 minutes of completion of the first round. The organizers will give a walk over to the opponent in the event student does not turn up in time. No protests on walk overs would be entertained or admitted by the Organisers as it is important to continue with the tournament and not wait for a particular competitor.

Subject to the number of entries the time taken for completion will vary.

All are requested to be there at 8.30 am to complete the formalities of fee payment and providing the bonafide proof.

Around 9 am there will be a presentation on Thejomaya for 15 minutes followed by the rules and regulations of the tournament. The tournament will immediately commence thereafter.

Is this tournament recognized by government or any other authority?

No. This tournament is organized by Thejomaya, Centre for Excellence aimed at promoting competition amongst players with an objective of giving players to use their conceptual skills objectively.

Protests

No protests by players or parents will be allowed. Any decision made by the Organisers will be final and binding on the players.

Awards

Individual Awards

Thejomaya encourages players to excel in their academics and reward them with prizes. The semi finalists and finalists will be given cash prizes apart from Certificates from the quarter final rounds. The Winner and Runner will be given Thejomaya Trophies.

Prize Money:

Winner – Cash prize Rs. 1000/-

Runner up – Cash prize Rs. 700/-

Semi Finals – Cash Prize Rs. 500/- each

Can Student’s parents come to the Centre?

Ofcourse Yes. The parents are encouraged to come to the Centre alongwith their children. However they are not permitted to enter the hall during the tournament.

How about Snacks and lunch?

Thejomaya will provide water at the Centre. The players shall bring their own snacks (dry ones preferred) and lunch (again dry lunch preferred) as the organizers expect the tournament to last through the day depending on the number of entries.

For Parents who wish to know about the hotels, there are 2 vegeterian restaurants (Hotel Sangeetha – half a kilometer and Hotel Meenakshi Bhavan – 1 km) towards the North of Santhome High Road.

Changes in timings and Fixtures

Any changes in timings will be duly informed through mobile SMS and the same will be informed in our web site www.thejomaya.com/mpc . The fixtures (who will compete against whom) draw for the tournament will also be made available on 4th July 2009 by 8pm through the website.
