Thejomaya, a center for Excellence that was promoted
recently by Uma Yogesh, organised a mathematics Tournament in which students of
Class 9 and 10 Participated. The Competition had different rounds where students
had to prove their skills in matematics. It had the same format as that of an individual
sports tournament, where players competed one on one to reach the finals.
The Competition started with a qualifying round, where
16 out of 24 students were selected based on the scores obtained in the test. These
students were pitted against each other to advance into the quarter finals, semi
finals and the final round. The players had to answer 20 questions in 15 minutes
in the first two rounds and later in the finals, they had to answer 35 questions
in 30 minutes. The questions became tougher with each round. According to Uma, “This
tournament attracted students from more than nine schools and their enthusiasm increased
with every round. In fact

we felt it was important for the students to answer all the papers, leaving
the losers in the different rounds, to answer the objective questions”.
Mr.Raghunathan, academic counsellor, and well
known mathematics teacher, said that he was surprised by the speed at which the
students could answer the tough questions. According to him the gap analysis of
various performances was made as students were able to perform better in tougher
rounds than in qualifying ones.
Uma Yogesh felt that the entire tournament was
organised meticulously thanks to Mr.Ravi Venkatesh and their team including Vasu
and Rameshbabu. They are well known state Table Tennis Players, who had organised
several Tournaments.According to Ravi, the same format enabled them to identify
the seedings for players to play the subsequent rounds.
